For our 5th assignment we had to find a topic and create an A/B test based on a hypothesis. My idea was to test how the presence of icons in sign-up forms can aid short-term memory.

When creating the sign-up form, I decided on scrambling the order of the input fields, so the usual order that users are familiar with wouldn't bias the test.

The only variable in this test is the presence of the icons

Evaluation and reflection

In order to test it I decided to use 6 people, each of them only testing one of the versions, again, to avoid possible biases.

The tests consisted of two questions for each participant:

  • On what position was the username field?

  • What was the 3rd field?

The results of the tests were, as expected, confirming the hypothesis. Out of the 6 tests conducted, the users who had the version with icons had better accuracy in their answers.

This week's topic was long-awaited, as A/B testing was mentioned since the start of our year, but this was the first opportunity to get hands-on experience on how it works and how it should be done properly. Both the creation and the testing went on seamlessly, without any troubles
